Merry-Go-Round Coat Rack

An installation for the exhibition ' The Haunting Dogs Full of Grace' at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, the 'Merry-Go-Round Coat Rack' is designed by Studio Wieki Somers. The carousel is made from red and white ropes patterned in-house at the studio. Plastic pulley blocks, fire hoses and metal weights were used to make the mechanism, which is simple to use by the visitor themselves.

The Merry-Go-Round Coat Rack is inspired by the mine workers from whom their coats had to be hoisted back up because of the limited space. In the museum the coats float under the ceiling, fill the empty space, and hang savely high.

If I'm not mistaken this has been in place for a couple of years... It's certainly been here since I moved to Rotterdam 18 months ago. It's a lot of fun to use - a bit confusing first time round though. There are also lockers for bags etc. in the rotunda in the centre.
