Mapping Earth in Two Dimensions

An alternative ways of representing the earth's surface, computer scientist Jack van Wijk at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has developed a new technique by using algorithms to 'unfold' and cut into the Earth's surface in a way that minimizes distortion, and keeps the distracting effect of cutting into the map to a minimum.

Mapping Earth in Two Dimensions

The globe is projected on a myriahedron, a polyhedron with a very large number of faces. Next, this polyhedron is cut open and unfolded. The resulting maps have a large number of interrupts, but are (almost) conformal and conserve areas. A general approach is presented to decide where to cut the globe, followed by three different types of solution. These follow from the use of meshes based on the standard graticule, the use of recursively subdivided polyhedra and meshes derived from the geography of the earth. - Jack van Wijk

Doritos Packaging

A brand new packaging for Doritos, designer Peter Parlov developed the packaging concept based on the shape of Doritos chip. What’s good about the form of the packaging is its structure which can keep the chips closed after opening.

PIG Swine Flu Mask

Have some fun with the PIG swine flu mask designed by Zijns Design Office. Involving no technology at all, the mask is just printed with the Pig's nose graphic, try to create some joy for the wearers and the surrounding amid the swine flu pandemic. And why a Pig's nose? The swine flu has been widely known as 'Pig influenza' in Chinese (just as SARS known as 'Bird flu'), so a Pig mask will certainly hint obliquely the current situation.

Sort Design

It's hard to change the design perception of an old institution especially of churches, but the City Church of Belfast is one of the rare. Belfast-based Sort design has unified all the communication materials such as leaflets, welcome pack with vibrant colours and simple & clean bold typography.

The end result is refreshing, away from the traditional churches' materials we used to found. Also, the new design easily give City Church of Belfast an edge over others in attracting new and younger visitors.

Pink Ghost by Périphériques Architects

The Pink Ghost project by Périphériques Architects is a temporary installation that making an argument about the use of public space. First built in Place Furstemberg, Paris, the Pink Ghost was a 'sculptural transformation' of the centre of the square with a 'preservation' stance. Made of pink epoxy, the installation enveloped four trees and a streetlight to a height of 2.5 metres and covered the entire surface of the small central square. While the covering work was being done, the architects cleverly 'slipped' about 20 chairs and five coffee tables under the resine, to turn this exterior urban space into an 'interior' lounge/salon situated outside, in a way that raises questions about the status of public space in the city.

Since then, the installation has been remove and rebuilt in the French pavilion at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice.

UKI Hashi Chopsticks by Mikiya Kobayas

Designed by Mikiya Kobayashi, the UKI Hashi ( Hashi means chopsticks in Japanese) are chopsticks that do not need a chopstick rest. The clever tapered tips allow for setting them without the tips touching the table. Thus, the table stays clean, ensuring that the only thing that touches your chopsticks is the food you're about to enjoy.

Incredible illustrations by Spain-based freelance illustrator and architect, Vasco Mourao. The subject matter reminds me of the Japanese animated fantasy film Howl’s Moving Castle, and Vasco's drawing style and his perspective just made me amaze!

Olive Oil by Philippe Starck

Designer Philippe Starck and enologist Michel Rolland have collaborated to create an ecologically produced La Amarilla de Ronda (LA) organic extra virgin olive oils from Andalucia, Spain.

The project grew as a result of mutual friend Pedro Gomez de Baeza’s hobby of making the oils on a small scale at his family estate and presenting them as holiday gifts. Decades of pressure from gift recipients to take the oils to a wider audience encouraged Mr. Baeza to call upon Rolland to help him create the perfect blends to best pair with a wide variety of foods. Longtime friend Starck volunteered to ensure that the package reflected the quality of the product inside.

Philippe Starck created the unique, slender tins to be reminiscent of books. The design incorporates the qualities of water-tightness and impermeability to light and have a protective inner layer of lacquer in order to preserve the qualities of these exquisite oils.

The olive oil is available in 250 ml, 500 ml and 3L tins.

Found these simple and beautiful art pieces by Lian Ng. The GridArt is a series of artwork based on the repetitive pattern of grid paper, where the lines are manipulated to create a structural terrain, deconstructed to unfurl like a sail in the wind, and assimilated to spring like tightly wound threads.
